East Croydon Connection

Wind and thunder –

Approaching train.

I shrink,

flatten to railings

despite the platform width.

My bag twitches –

I whirl to look.

Two eyes,

smiling to mine

the briefest of squeezes.

I performed this poem at the 2019 Brighton and Hove Poetry Festival and won 3rd prize, of approximately 600 entries. Thanks to Brighton & Hove Arts Council for running the event and the competition. Read more about the Poetry Festival here.
